How to Measure Guide

Helping to make measuring up your windows as simple a task as possible

How to measure for curtains

  • Install your track or pole before taking your measurements.
  • The track or pole should extend beyond the window at either side, to allow room for the curtains to be drawn back off the window.
  • To optimise the light from your window we recommend your pole extends approx. 30cm either side of the window for goblet and tab-headed curtains.
  • Width

  • Measure the track or pole, NOT the window itself.
  • For tracks: measure the width from end to end (see diagram 1).
  • If the track overlaps in the middle you must include the overlap (see diagram 2).

  • For poles: measure the width between the decorative finials. (see diagram 3)

  • Drop

  • For tracks: measure from the top of track to allow it to be hidden by the curtains (see diagram 4).

  • For poles: measure from the underside of the curtain ring to allow the pole to be seen above the curtains. (See diagram 5)

  • For eyelet curtains: measure from the top of the pole and add 3.5cm.
  • For tab-headed curtains: measure from the top of the pole. To minimise light exposure we recommend you position your pole a minimum of 15cm above the top of the window.
  • Measure from the correct point to: (see diagram 6)
  • - 1cm above the sill for SILL length;

    - The desired length for BELOW-SILL length;

    - 1cm above the floor for FULL length.

    How to measure for blinds

    Blinds can sit either inside or outside a window recess. It’s important to decide which you want before taking your measurements.

  • Please supply measurements:
  • - to the nearest millimetre for roller blinds;

    - in centimetres for roman blinds.

  • Please note: for fabric roller blinds the fabric will be approx. 4cm narrower than the overall width measurement given to allow for the roller mechanism.
  • Please note: for fabric roller blinds which will sit inside a recess, 0.5cm will be removed from the ordered measurement to ensure a satisfactory fitting.

  • Inside a window recess(see diagram 7)

  • Measure the length from the top to the bottom of the recess.
  • Measure the width at the top of the window recess, where the blind is to be fitted.
  • Measure the width at two other points of the recess, i.e. in the middle and at the bottom (see diagram 7). Record the lowest measurement of the three to ensure the blind does not snag when being lowered.

  • Please note: tab-headed roman blinds are not suitable for fitting inside a recess. Poles are not included with tab headed roman blinds.

  • Outside a window recess(see diagram 8)

  • To obtain the length, measure from the required position above the window down to the required length.
  • To obtain the width, measure the width of the window and add approx. 14cm to allow sufficient overlap at each side of the window.

  • How to measure for pelmets

  • As a guide, to determine the pelmet length, divide the curtain length by six (e.g. length of curtains ordered 240cm, recommended pelmet length 40cm).
  • For pelmet width, measure the distance between the wall and the front of the pelmettrack along the length (b) and back to the wall (c), then add together (see diagram 9).

  • For an arched pelmet, the finished pelmet length measurement is taken from the top of the pelmet track to the midpoint (i.e. at the top of the arch). Pelmet sides will be 20cm longer (see diagram 10).
