For those of us who are stuck in the city this summer, the gorgeous Helen from Coco Mama Style has put together a little go-to edit to show us how to tackle summer in the city with style!

When the temperature rises and the holiday season begins our thoughts naturally turn towards what to pack in our suitcase for that week or two away. Dressing for a sun-soaked break abroad is relatively straightforward; we’ll generally wear less to beat the heat, soak up some vitamin D and hit the beach or relax poolside. Simple. But when it comes to choosing outfits day-in-day-out during the summer back home, many of us struggle.

It’s a question I’m often asked when styling women during the warmer months because while it may feel like we’re in the Mediterranean outside, we still need to dress appropriately for work and be prepared for changeable weather, this is Britain after all! What works on a Greek island doesn’t translate to city life over here so how do we take on summer in the city in style? Look for great basics with added interest, natural fabrics, and bright hues tempered with light neutrals.

Be Creative With Colour

2 In theory, citrus yellow with forest green and, let’s call it a sage grey, may not sound like a winning combination but the skirt here adds a twist. A navy, cream or white skirt would look good in its place but this alternative neutral makes the outfit a little more interesting. Equally, this skirt could also be teamed with a white, navy or black top to give you more opportunities to wear it but choosing the yellow top takes the outfit up a sartorial notch.

Classics With A Twist

3 The structure and formality of a fitted skirt is softened here with its lace top layer and ruffle hem – which is great for balancing wider hips by the way – and it can take you from the office to occasion wear with the simple change of a shoe. I styled this look with plain patent courts but for a dressier feel switch to some metallic heels.

Upgrade Your Basics

4 Ruffle details are still going strong and are a great addition to what would otherwise be a basic jersey top. The shoulder flounce elevates it from a layering vest, which would simply add colour under a blazer or cardigan, to a statement top in its own right, all the while ensuring you’re comfortable and cool in cotton in the city.

Bring The Look Together

6 With block colour, texture, and neutrals ticked off the outfit-building checklist, we still need to bring a bag into the mix, which complements the whole look. Cross-body bags are ideal for busy city life to keep everything important safe and at hand while leaving you hands-free to carry your coffee, tote bag, newspaper, or all three! The dark green of this bag will add a little something to any outfit from day to night without making too much of a statement, while the tassel detail gives you fashion brownie points as it’s the accessory detail du jour.

Essential Eyewear

5 Last but not least, particularly as I’m not often seen without my sunglasses all year round, but it goes without saying that they are of course a summertime essential for everyone, so what’s the 2017 update? Look for cat’s eye shaped frames and a retro feel with different colour options. Don’t be afraid to try new shapes and styles, because right now, anything goes when it comes to your eyewear.

Go forth and experiment with colour, lighten up your neutrals and upgrade a simple vest and skirt outfit to city-dweller chic with just a few added details to beat the heat in style.
