Blinds Buying Guide

Blinds Information

General Information

Hanging

  • Full instructions on how to hang your blind are on the leaflet included with your product.
  • Please ensure that fabric blinds do not hang too close to windows or radiators, where both excessive moisture from condensation or excessive heat and dryness can have quite severe effects in terms of dimensional variation and soiling. Condensation can result in the discolouration of the blind, which could eventually lead to fabric deterioration.

Care

  • Care instructions are specific to the blind style ordered and will be detailed on the relevant information page for the blind.

Fabric Design

  • Laura Ashley Made to Measure Fabric Blinds are always cut on the same design at the top. If you order two or more blinds of identical size, in the same fabric, the position of the design will be identical in both/all. Should you order two or more blinds of a different length in the same fabric, the design will be the same at the top but will differ at the bottom.
  • Where a product has more than one width of fabric, on the seams where they join, the fabric design will be matched.
  • However, if you order a set of blinds to be hung next to each other, the design cannot match at the adjacent edges, when the blinds are fully lowered. This is because part of the design is lost in the blind facings, and as blinds are made with the centre of the fabric design in the centre of the blind, different widths of blinds will have different parts of the design at the edges.

Design Alignment

  • Natural fabrics do not always have perfect alignment of the design straight across the width, but our manufacturing techniques guarantee that Laura Ashley fabrics do not go off line by more than 3%. (I.e. 4cms on a 140cm wide fabric.)

Movement of Fabric in Situ

  • Due to variations in atmospheric conditions such as humidity and temperature, there may be a possibility of shrinkage or relaxation of fabric blinds whilst in situ at the window. It is important that the temperature and humidity of the surrounding environment should be controlled in order to prevent the movement.
  • As such conditions are beyond the control of Laura Ashley, we are unable to accept any responsibility for the movement of fabric blinds when hung.

Measuring for Blinds

How to Measure for Blinds

  • Blinds can sit either inside or outside a window recess. It's important to decide which you want before taking your measurements.
  • Measurements must be in full centimetres. Where your measurement falls in between two whole centimetres, always round down to the nearest centimetre (eg, for a measurement of 100.5cm, record 100cm).
  • Please note: for fabric roller blinds the fabric will be approx. 4cm narrower than the overall width measurement given to allow for the roller mechanism.
  • Always use a metal tape measure as a cloth or plastic tape may stretch.
  • Double-check all measurements.

Inside a Window Recess

Width

  • For Roller blinds, measure the width at the top of the window recess, where the blind is to be fitted.
  • For all other blinds, measure the width at the top, middle & bottom of the recess. If there is a difference, record the smallest measurement to ensure that the blind does not snag on the recess when lowered.

Drop

  • Measure the length at both sides and middle of the recess. If there is a difference, order using the smallest measurement to ensure the blind hangs freely.

Please note: for certain blinds that sit inside a recess, the following will be removed from the ordered measurement to ensure a satisfactory fitting:

  • Fabric Roller Blind : 5mm
  • Wooden Venetian Blind : 12mm
  • Metal Venetian Blind : 8-12mm
  • Splitwood Roman Blind : 10mm
  • Natural Roller Blind : 3-6mm
  • Vertical Blinds: 10mm (20mm if face fixing)

Please note: tab-headed Roman blinds are not suitable for fitting inside a recess.

Bead Trimmed Roman blinds are not suitable for fitting inside a recess. The trim is additional to the ordered length.

Outside a Window Recess

Width

  • Measure the width at the top of the window recess, and add a minimum of 7cms each side (14cms in total) for the blind to overlap the window.

Drop

  • Measure from the required position above the window down to the required length.

Lining Information

Roman Blinds

Lining

  • Laura Ashley Made to Measure Roman Blinds are available lined, to protect main fabric from fading by sunlight and improve product drape.
  • Lining is 100% cotton sateen, and is available in a choice of colours: White, Cream or Oatmeal.
  • If you are not sure which colour to choose, a colour will be recommended for the fabric you have chosen as you proceed through your order.

Thermal Blackout Lining

  • All Roman Blinds are available with Thermal Blackout Lining, (instead of standard lining as above), at an additional cost.
  • Thermal Blackout lining is a 50%cotton/50%polyester fabric with a 3-pass blackout coating, and is available in a choice of colours: White or Cream.
  • Thermal Blackout lining greatly reduces light coming from outside penetrating the room, so is excellent for children's rooms. However, although light cannot penetrate the lining, light can come into the room around the top and sides of the blind. Fitting the blind inside the window recess, and using it in conjunction with curtains can improve this.
  • If outside light is strong, it may also be possible to notice pinpricks of light in rows across the blind, where the tapes that hold the rods are attached to the blind.
  • When dry cleaning is advised for a Thermal blackout lined Roman Blind, a sensitive process should always be used.

Interlining

  • All Roman Blinds are available with Interlining, (instead of standard lining as above), at an additional cost.
  • Interlining is 100% cotton sateen lining fabric, with an extra layer of 100% polyester wadding laminated to the reverse. Interlining is available in a choice of colours: White, Cream or Oatmeal.
  • Interlining increases the bulk of your blind, this needs to be considered if a long blind is required, as when fully drawn up the blind may hang forwards at the front.
  • Interlining is not available in conjunction with Thermal Blackout Lining.

Roller Blinds

Lining

  • Laura Ashley Made to Measure Roller Blinds are available with lining laminated to the back of the main fabric, to stiffen the main fabric and protect it from fading by sunlight.
  • Lining is 100% cotton, and is available in a choice of colours: White, Cream or Oatmeal.
  • If you are not sure which colour to choose, a colour will be recommended for the fabric you have chosen as you proceed through your order.

Thermal Blackout Lining

  • All Roller Blinds are available with Thermal Blackout Lining, laminated to the main fabric, (instead of standard lining as above), at an additional cost.
  • Thermal Blackout lining is a polyester/cotton fabric with a 3-pass blackout coating, and is available in a choice of colours: White or Cream.
  • Thermal Blackout lining greatly reduces light coming from outside penetrating the room, so is excellent for children's rooms. However, although light cannot penetrate the lining, light can come into the room around the top and sides of the blind. Using it in conjunction with curtains can improve this.

Hardware

  • The fabric part of the blind is mounted on a white-coated steel tube. White-coated steel bracket fittings, which are included, can be fitted to a wall or ceiling, inside or outside a recess.

Measurements

  • The fabric part of the blind will be approximately 4cms narrower than the ordered width, because the brackets and operating mechanism are situated at each end of the blind, which reduces the space left for the fabric. This should be considered when ordering a blind for a recess, in order to ensure the glazed area is covered. Rollers that are both wide and long cannot always be achieved due to manufacturing methods.

Care

  • Roller blinds can be cleaned by removing the surface dust with a soft duster. It is recommended that any stains should be removed without delay.
  • Slight or localized dirt: All fabric can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth or sponge. A non-synthetic detergent may be added to lukewarm cleaning water if required. Do not scrub or rub hard, since you may damage the protective coating.
  • WARNING! Complete immersion of the roller blind in water is NOT recommended. The fabric is adhered to the steel roller tube and cannot be separated from it without damaging the blind. Contact with water could cause the fabric to detach from the tube, and could also cause rust formation.

Pleated Border Roman Blind

  • Hardware - This blind does not have a bottom weight bar.
  • Border - The border is available in a selection of plain coloured fabrics. When the blind is fully drawn up, the pleated border extends 10cms below the other folds. This should be considered when ordering a Pleated Border Roman Blind, as it will be 10cms longer than a Straight Edge Roman Blind of the same length, when fully pulled up, and so will cover up more of the window, especially when inside a recess.
  • Important Information - Border fabric should be of a similar weight to main fabric. If you would like to check the two fabrics together, please use our swatch service.

Tab Headed Roman Blind

The classic blind with a decorative tab heading, suitable for use with a curtain pole (not supplied).

Max. width to order = 200cms. Max length to order = 300cms.

  • Features - A Tab Headed Roman Blind consists of a rectangle of flat fabric, which when drawn up forms a series of horizontal folds. When viewed from the front, the front fold covers the intermediate folds, with a small amount of the back flap showing below. The blind is hung from a pole by means of fabric tabs.
  • Hardware - The operating mechanism of the blind is supported by a wall-mounted track: the fabric of the blind must then be suspended by the tabs from a separate curtain pole, not supplied. (The track is fitted just below the top edge of the main part of the blind, so that no track shows between the tabs).
  • Pole - Tab Headed Romans can be used with any pole up to a diameter of 3.5cms.
  • Tabs - The tabs are 5cms wide and 10cms long. They are random cut, unless in a check or striped fabric, in which case tabs will be cut from the darkest shade wherever possible. Tabs are made from the same fabric as the blind.
  • Important Information - This blind is not suitable for inside a recess. The pole required to hang the blind is not supplied. The pole needs to be fitted at least 15cms above the window due to length of tabs.

Bead Trimmed Roman Blind

The classic Roman blind with a decorative bead trim that falls below the blind, attached to the lower edge.

Max. width to order = 200cms. Max length to order = 300cms.

  • Features - A Roman Blind consists of a rectangle of flat fabric, which when drawn up forms a series of horizontal folds. When the blind is fully drawn up the lowest part of the blind forms a back flap, which covers all folds on the reverse of the blind to protect the fabric from fading. When viewed from the front, the front fold covers the intermediate folds, with a small amount of the back flap showing below.
  • Trim - This is a glass bead droplet trim attached to a decorative braid, available in a choice of colours. The braid is attached to the lower edge of the blind, so that the bead droplets hang below the finished edge of the blind. The blind - excluding the trim - will be made to the ordered length and the addition of the trim will be extra to this, therefore this blind can only be used outside the recess where the beads are allowed to hang freely.
  • Cleaning - This product should be specialist cleaned only, as the trim may become damaged or detached.
  • Choking Hazard - This product should be kept out of reach of children.
  • Important Information - Trim is additional to the ordered length of the blind. Recommended for outside the recess so trim hangs freely.

When viewed from the front, the front fold covers the intermediate folds, with a small amount of the back flap showing below.
  • Borders - The borders are available in a selection of plain coloured fabrics.
