Made to the most exacting standards and designed in styles and sizes to suit the way you live, all of our upholstery will bring exceptional beauty to your home. Whether you are looking for a stunning new sofa or statement leather chair you’ll find exactly what you want in our Upholstery section.

Each piece is made-to-order in the fabric of your choice, and individually inspected before leaving the factory. When buying a new sofa or chair, you look for three things: style, comfort, and quality. The shape and design of your upholstery has a huge impact on the look and feel of your room. Clean lines create a contemporary space, while formal decorative scrolls give a traditional feel. Some styles are more versatile and can look fabulous in both traditional and modern rooms. It’s all down to personal taste.

Buying upholstered furniture is a big investment, so you’ll want to feel confident that you’re making the right choice. It may not be the first thing on your mind when purchasing a sofa, but things like cushion fillings, frames and springs all need to be considered. We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase, so please take time to familiarise yourself with the information in this guide.

Laura Ashley offer a range of over 100 beautifully designed fabrics and leathers. All our upholstery fabrics are suitable for domestic upholstery use and coordinating scatter cushions are available to order. Please take time to read the Choosing Your Covers section below. Swatch Service

  • To help visualise how fabrics will work in your home, fabric swatches are available to order for all fabrics shown on this site.
  • If you see a fabric that you like while browsing curtains, blinds, or upholstery, simply tick the ‘Add Free Swatch’ box and your requested swatches will be saved in the ‘My Swatches’ shortlist at the bottom of the page.
  • Once you are happy with your choice of swatches click ‘Order Swatches’.
  • Once you have filled in your details the swatches will be sent direct to your home.
  • Fabric swatches are free of charge; therefore you will not be asked for any payment details.
  • Fabric swatches take approximately 3-5 working days to arrive.
  • Every effort is made to ensure that the products supplied correspond as closely as possible to samples in our stores, catalogue, swatches and our website. However, variations may occur during normal manufacturing between batches, and due to the unique characteristics of natural materials.
  • For Laura Ashley upholstered products swatches are illustrative of the design and colour. Delivered products may differ due to fire resistant treatment which may alter the texture and appearance from that of the swatch.

Frames and Guarantee

  • The timbers used in Laura Ashley upholstery frames are carefully selected for their stability and strength, quality and durability. Our frames can be made from a variety of materials, but most are made from hardwood and a mixture of manufactured man made boards. Frames are glued, screwed and dowelled.
  • Our robust and durable frames and springs are manufactured to comply with British Standards and are guaranteed for a reassuring five years of normal domestic use.
  • The guarantee does not apply to the covering fabric or cushion fillings as we have no control over their use, or the environment in which they are kept.
  • Seconds and ex-display pieces are not covered by the five year guarantee.

Pad Fillings

Most ranges contain a high quality fibre seat cushion interior, this is a one of the highest quality premium polyester fibres with an advanced coiled shape and will have a more relaxed, casual look, ideal if you like to curl up on the sofa.

  • Fibre pads must be plumped daily after use to maintain the soft comfortable feel.
  • Carefully follow the guide enclosed with your product to prevent fibres binding which can cause cushions to flatten or lose comfort and shape.
  • To correctly maintain, at least weekly, turn the pad onto one of its outside edges and beat the opposite side vigorously inwards with the flat of your hand, repeat for each side, then shake and replace.
  • Pads must be removed from their covers to carry out maintenance on a regular basis.
  • All fabric covered cushions should be turned and their positions rotated to ensure even wear wherever possible.

Selected products have feather, or a mixture of fibre and feather. This is a luxury pad filling and as with all feather fillings will flatten considerably with use. It is easily restored with the same maintenance as fibre pads.

The Brandon range features Foam interiors which provide a firmer more resilient seat that benefits from low maintenance.

Loose or Fixed Covers

  • Loose covers are covers which can be removed and are available on selected items to present a more casual relaxed fit, offering versatility for cleaning and updating your look. They’re an ideal option if you have children or pets or enjoy entertaining.
  • Regular redressing will be required to keep them neat and tidy.
  • All loose covers have a 3% allowance for shrinkage (which will vary from fabric to fabric) after initial cleaning and will not fit tightly on arrival.
  • Cleaning regularly will maintain their appearance and prevent premature wear. Please follow the care label sewn into the cover.
  • Fixed covers are permanently attached to the frame and are more tailored they can be professionally cleaned in situ.

Dark or Light Woodwork

Many Fabric Upholstery ranges offer a choice of light or dark legs and finials, to co-ordinate with your furniture.

Sofabeds

Sofa beds are ideal for accommodating those extra guests and contain a bed mechanism under the seat cushion this will create a firmer seat than standard sofas, and raise the depth of the seat slightly.

Operate the bed mechanism with care to prevent damage to the mechanism or upholstery.

Armcaps

Available on most shapes, fabric only. We recommend the use of armcaps to help protect your furniture for longer in high wear areas.

  • Provide extra durability where it is most needed.
  • Protection against staining on arms and conveniently removed for cleaning.
  • Armcaps can be selected when ordering online as part of the 'Complete the look' stage after selecting your sofa or chair.

Cushions

The classic square piped cushion.

Available in a choice of two sizes.

  • FEATURES – A square cushion, using the same fabric on the front and back of the cover, with piping attached to all four edges. A zip is positioned along the bottom edge of the cushion cover to enable the feather pad (included) to be removed when the cover is cleaned.
  • PIPING – Piping cord is covered using either the same fabric as the cushion or a choice of plain coloured fabrics. Cushions made from thick fabrics will not have any piping - these fabrics will be indicated as you proceed through your order.
  • SIZES – Available as 40cm square piped or 55cm square piped.

The rectangular piped cushion.

Available in a choice of two sizes.

  • FEATURES – A rectangular cushion, using the same fabric on the front and back of the cover, with piping attached to all four edges. A zip is positioned along the bottom edge of the cushion cover to enable the feather pad (included) to be removed when the cover is cleaned.

  • SIZES – Available as 40cm x 30cm rectangle piped or 60cm x 40cm rectangle piped.

The bolster cushion.

Available in a choice of two sizes.

  • FEATURES – A cylindrical cushion, using the same fabric on the main part and ends of the cover. A zip is positioned along the bottom edge of the cushion cover to enable the feather pad (included) to be removed when the cover is cleaned.
  • PIPING – bolster cushion covers are unpiped as standard.
  • SIZES – Available as 40cm or 50cm wide, both with a diameter of 20cms.

Measuring up for Upholstery Delivery

When buying large items of furniture, it is vital to make sure it will fit your room and that it can get into your house. Make sure there is enough height, width and diagonal depth to accommodate your furniture’s entry and that there’s plenty of room to manoeuvre around corners and through doors.

Steps to Ensure a Problem Free Delivery

Before ordering, please check carefully that the upholstery, bed and cabinet products you have ordered will fit into the intended space in your home.

  1. Check the dimensions of the space in which the product will be placed.
    • Allow for skirting boards, especially in recesses, door or window frames, and headroom under any unusual spaces such as sloping roofs.
    • When ordering a sofabed, recliner or any extending item, remember to consider your product size when opened.
    • Product dimensions shown are taken from the largest or widest point.
    • H=Height, W=Width, D=Depth
  2. Measure any staircases, doorways or corridors the product will have to pass through, including the space for manoeuvring and turning.
    • This is especially important on products marked as LARGE as this indicates they will require extra space for manoeuvring during delivery and so all measurements should be checked carefully.
  3. Our delivery vehicles are large. Please check that they can gain safe and ample access to or immediately adjacent to the delivery address.
  4. Please let us know at time of order if there are any access restrictions or special needs which must be considered to ensure a successful delivery.

Cleaning & Care

To help prolong the life of your upholstery fabric or leather please consider the following:

Fabric Cleaning

Follow the specific instructions for each fabric carefully and always check the label, as recommended care for the fabric may differ from the recommended care for the product. Fixed and loose covers can be professionally cleaned in situ.

  • Many of our fabrics have a protective coating applied (excluding selected fabrics to to the composition), however as with all upholstery, periodic cleaning of the entire piece is essential to maintain appearance and prevent premature fading and wear.
  • Clean co-ordinated items at the same time, as some colour loss may occur.
  • Always allow for 3% shrinkage upon the first wash or dry clean.
  • To remove everyday household dust and dirt, clean regularly by gently vacuuming fabric.
  • Remove all spills immediately. Blot liquid spills with a clean, dry, white cloth, work towards the centre of the spill. Do not rub or use abrasive cleaners as this may damage the furniture. Should the piece become stained or suffer other damage we recommend professional advice is sought. If you have Guardsman Protection Plan contact them immediately for advice, alternatively a nationwide service is offered by Safeclean (0800 585693).

Leather Cleaning

  • Apply specialist leather care products only as directed on the container and try first on a hidden area of leather. Do not use leather soap, saddle soap, hide food, or any polish other than that recommended by a reputable retailer. Suitable leather care kits can be obtained from Laura Ashley. Contents include: 250ml leather cleaner, 250ml leather protector, cloth, sponge and a guide to application and use.
  • To remove atmospheric dust and dirt that could cause premature wear, clean regularly with a soft cloth or brush. Avoid using a vacuum cleaner on leather.
  • Show wood should be kept clean with a lightly damp cloth rinsed in warm water, never use detergents. Polish periodically with a natural wax.
  • Remove all spills immediately. Blot liquid spills with a clean, dry, white cloth, work towards the centre of the spill. Do not rub or use abrasive cleaners, solvents or detergents as this may damage, the furniture.
  • Should the piece become stained or suffer other damage we recommend professional advice is sought. If you have Guardsman protection plan contact them immediately for advice, alternatively a nationwide service is offered by Safeclean (0800 585693).

General Care

Pad Fillings

Most ranges contain a high quality fibre; this is a premium polyester fibre with an advanced coiled shape.

  • Fibre pads must be plumped after use to maintain the soft comfortable feel.
  • Carefully follow the guide enclosed with your product to prevent fibres binding which can cause cushions to flatten or lose comfort and shape.
  • To correctly maintain, at least weekly, turn the pad onto one of its outside edges and beat the opposite side vigorously inwards with the flat of your hand, repeat for each side, then shake and replace.
  • Pads must be removed from their covers to carry out maintenance on a regular basis.
  • All fabric covered cushions should be turned and their positions rotated to ensure even wear wherever possible. Non-reversible cushions should have the pad turned inside the cover.
  • Leather and selected upholstery ranges have cushion covers which are not fully reversible, check the product specifications before purchase to ensure you will be satisfied with your choice.

Selected products have feather, or a mixture of fibre and feather. This is a luxury pad filling and as with all feather fillings will flatten considerably with use. It is easily restored with the same maintenance as fibre pads.

Sunlight & Heat

  • All upholstery and leather fabrics can be affected by light, so we recommend it is positioned away from direct sunlight and heat to protect it from fading and premature wear.
  • At least a 30cm clearance from heat sources such as radiators is advised to prevent colour change or permanent marks occurring.
  • You should not place hot items such as cups, laptops or hot water bottles on leather as this may mark the leather, causing it to darken.
  • We do not recommend locating products in excessively high or low temperatures, or where the environment is often damp as this may cause product issues.

Care

  • Take care to prevent sharp objects such as toys, buckles and heels from coming into contact with your furniture as they may cause damage. We recommend you discourage domestic pets from climbing on or clawing upholstery.
  • Avoid air pollution such as cigarette smoke and cooking fumes, which can cause leather to fade or change colour.
  • Take care to avoid hair preparations and other cosmetics coming into contact with the fabric or leather; as this is likely to damage the surface.
  • Avoid sitting on the arms, or edge of furniture as this may cause distortion or damage. Pushing feet against or placing them on the arms may cause damage to the arm or frame.
  • Place furniture gently in place when moving it, as dropping onto glides or legs may cause damage.
  • Please do not allow your furniture to be jumped on, as this will damage the springs and frame, and invalidate the guarantee.
  • We recommend wooden and delicate flooring is protected from possible marking by feet or castors.

Durability

It is important to bear in mind how much use your sofa will receive so that a fabric or leather suitable for your needs is selected.

To help you decide, the durability of each fabric is graded within the fabric glossary as:

  • Light domestic – for light/ infrequent use
  • General domestic – for general/ frequent use

All fabrics are suitable for MTO headboards, arm-caps and scatter cushions unless otherwise stated.

  • Take extra care with sharp objects, such as studs and belt buckles as these can snag even the toughest of fabrics.
  • Many of our fabrics have a protective coating applied at the time of manufacture to help repel spills excludes selected fabrics due to the composition of the fabric. For extra peace of mind on upholstery in case of those little mishaps see details of our Guardsman Protection Plan.

Natural Fabric Features

Some fabrics have natural characteristics. Carefully consider these to select an upholstery cover perfect for you:

  • Some of our more delicate fabrics such as velvets and chenille’s exhibit shading variations, crushing, lines and bruising, which create unique features.
  • Fabrics with a linen and/or cotton content can pill and have fine threads visible. Some may display characteristic slub effects and may include occasional seeds and husks.
  • Linen has a natural tendency to crease which enhances its textural appearance, creases will soften as the fabric relaxes in use. Pilling can occasionally occur in early stages of use, which is a feature of such fabrics.
  • Fabrics selected for upholstered products may adopt a slightly different texture and appearance from those purchased by the metre due to fire resistant processing

None of these fabric features is a sign of premature wear. They are natural or normal characteristics which do not affect product quality.

Using Your own Upholsterer

  • For upholstery purchased by the metre, we recommend that you use a reputable upholsterer.
  • Many fabrics have a maximum length of 17m. For lengths greater than this check colour compatibility of each piece before cutting and upholstering.
  • For upholstering, all fabrics require a fire retardant barrier interliner, compliant with schedule 3 of the safety regulations; your upholsterer should advise.

Guide to Leather Upholstery

Investing in a True Original

Genuine leather is natural and warm with truly individual characteristics. Laura Ashley only use high quality full and semi aniline leathers, many tanned using water based dyes or pigments and finished with natural substances such as beeswax. This allows the natural markings, scars, shade variation and beautiful characteristics of authentic leather to be enjoyed. All our leathers are a by-product of the food industry. In fact, all Laura Ashley leather upholstery is made to exacting quality standards and individually inspected before leaving the manufacturer.

True Beauty Comes with Maturity

With a little care, leather will improve with age. Occasionally, the odd mark or scratch can occur, body shape moulding will happen and colours may mellow, but this does not affect durability, it will simply enhance the unique appearance of your piece and add extra character. Leather is an investment for the future to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Choose the Perfect Leather Option for You

We offer leathers to suit all tastes. Some of our leathers have extra character with distressed and wax finishes. These create more significant variances in texture and colour, with enhanced markings under the wax. Pull up*maybe evident, especially on waxed finishes and the crackle effect will vary for a truly individual look. Some of our leathers have had the surface texture removed and a finish applied, giving a more uniform appearance, although characteristics may still be visible. Several hides are used to cover a sofa so variation in colour and texture may occur between the different parts of a piece which will all create a sophisticated and unique effect.

Leather Bands

Our leathers are categorised into two bands of Fine and Character

Fine: High grade leathers with natural blemishes, markings and unique colour shading visible. They generally tend to have a more consistent appearance but with some characteristics still visible.

Character: For an authentic look, all of the natural blemishes, markings and unique colour shading are visible. Some have semi distressed and waxed finishes for more variance in character and texture.

Swatch Service

  • To help you visualise how different leathers will work in your home, you can order up to four leather swatches by calling 03332 008 009 (Calls may be recorded and/or monitored. Calls cost 10p per minute plus network extras) or order in store quoting the product number and a description
  • Swatches represent the leather design and colour. Delivered Product may differ due to normal variations in manufacturing. Swatches are not under tension, so if selected for upholstered products delivered items may adopt a slightly different texture and appearance.

Understanding Leather

It is important to understand the features found on all good quality leathers. These are natural characteristics of leather and should not be mistaken for defects.

Scars

Scars can be recognised as dark lines in the leather and do not affect the durability or performance.

Neck and Growth Marks

These lines are caused by stretching in the hide during its lifetime and may look like creases in the leather, these are features of leather and do not affect performance.

After a time all leathers will relax and mould from use, this is quite normal with leather upholstery and will not reduce comfort.

Shade variation

Every hide will have a slightly different grain pattern, and variation in colour within the same hide can occur. Four hides are needed to make one large sofa, so variation in colour and texture may occur between the different parts of a piece.

Pull Up*

Leather must be stretched taut for perfect upholstery; this causes it to appear lighter in colour especially across tighter areas such as arms. This effect will be more obvious on wax and oiled finishes.

Body Moulding

After a time all leathers will relax and mould from use, this is quite normal with leather upholstery especially those with fixed seats, and will not reduce comfort.

Scratches

On some wax finished leathers, characteristic scratch type marks may occur during the tanning and tumbling processes, these will be under the wax and quite normal. Wax and oiled finishes occasionally scratch in use, however these surface scratches can be reduced by massaging the leather to redistribute natural oils.

To maintain the unique look of your Laura Ashley leather furniture, we recommend you avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat, dust regularly with a soft cloth, remove spills immediately and use our Leather Care Collection to help treat everyday soiling, scratches and marks.

  • Lift the front steel rail using the handle. Do not lift from the back.
  • The folded frame will move upwards and forward.
  • Continue to unfold the mechanism until it is fully extended.
  • Remove bedding before closing bed.

Scatter Cushions

Our scatter cushions are filled with polyester fibre.
Cushions are sold individually to give you both style and comfort to your sofa.
Scatter cushions are available to order in most of our upholstery fabrics. This is the perfect way to finish your room; Scatter cushions are available in 3 sizes:

  • Regular size 40cm x 40cm
  • Large size 50cm x 50cm
  • Extra Large size 60cm x 60cm

Like pillows, the cushions require regular plumping up after use to retain shape. Creases must be smoothed out to maintain the life of the product.

Five Year Guarantee – Upholstered Furniture

We are pleased to advise you of our 5 year guarantee for our upholstered furniture. This guarantee is valid upon presentation of the original purchase receipt.

This guarantee only covers any defects caused in the manufacturing process of the frame and the springs of this piece, and does not apply to normal wear and tear of the fabric or leather upholstery.

By following the Laura Ashley Care Instructions provided with each piece, your new furniture and all its constituent parts should give you many years of comfort and pleasure. Treatment, cleaning and caring of this piece not in compliance with the Laura Ashley Care Instructions will render this guarantee invalid.

This guarantee does not apply to the covering fabric or cushion fillings as we have no control on the use or the environment they may be kept in.

If a claim arises under the terms of this guarantee, we reserve the right to appoint a representative of the company to inspect the complaint with the furniture in situ, prior to organising any repairs as may be deemed necessary.

In the event that we accept a claim to be valid under this guarantee, we reserve the right to exercise discretion as to either repair your furniture or provide a replacement. We may at our discretion offer you a refund depending on the circumstances for the piece in question which includes taking into account wear and tear, and enjoyment that you have received from this item.

In the event that we agree to an exchange or return, where a certain model under this guarantee has been discontinued, we reserve the right to replace the piece with a model of a similar quality and value.

This guarantee will be rendered invalid where we find that the piece has been tampered with or damaged by persons other than Laura Ashley authorised personnel.

Our products are designed to meet domestic standards and UK fire regulations. If you need products suitable for commercial use please contact our Commercial Design Service team. Seconds and ex display products are not covered by this guarantee.

This guarantee is offered as an extra benefit of your purchase, but does not affect your statutory rights.
